The Scriptures have much to say concerning the learning of history. It is the study of the Providential means through which God has brought to pass His will in time. History encompasses all the other academic disciplines and provides the soil from which the present and future are fulfilled and interpreted. One historian has rightly suggested that trying to understand the future without considering the past is like “trying to plant cut flowers.” Every tyrant in history has tried to either erase the past and start over, or reinterpret it to aid in fulfilling his new agenda. To know and understand history is to be, at least in part, intellectually armed to resist the tyrannies of the future.
